September 2022. I'm standing in a client's garage with a Sylvania 9006 bulb in one hand and an H13 LED in the other. Two vehicles, two headlight sockets, and absolutely no confidence about which goes where. That was the moment I realized I'd been coasting on assumptions for way too long.
Here's what led up to that moment, what it cost me, and the checklist I now use to keep it from ever happening again.
How I Got Here
I run a small lighting installation business. Six years in, mostly residential and light commercial work. I've installed a lot of Sylvania products—H13 LED headlight bulbs, G4 downlight capsule replacements, RGBW downlight fixtures, LED tubes. I'm not a huge electrical contractor. The Automotive Side: Sylvania 9006 and H13 LED
Let me address the question I get asked at least twice a week now: what does a Sylvania 9006 bulb fit?
The honest answer? It depends. Not the answer anyone wants, but there it is.
A Sylvania 9006 is a single-filament bulb used in certain headlight applications. It fits vehicles designed for the 9006 socket. But here's the catch—I learned the hard way that "designed for 9006" is not uniform across all vehicles. Some cars use 9006 for low beam, some for high beam, some for fog lights. And some vehicles that look like they'd take a 9006 actually take an H11 or a 9005.
The nomenclature is brutal. 9005, 9006, H10, H13—they share similar base designs but differ in locking tabs and power draw. Some aftermarket bulbs are advertised as "cross-compatible," but cross-compatible doesn't mean it's a proper fit.
Ray's Subaru was the problem. I assumed the 9006 was right for the low beam. Turns out that on that specific year and trim, the low beam takes an H13. The 9006 physically goes into the socket, but it doesn't lock in properly. It's like wearing a size 10 shoe when you're a size 9—it goes on, but you're not going far.
I realized this at the worst possible moment: after I'd already removed the old headlight assembly, with the 9006 dangling in place, one tab short of a secure fit. That's when I pulled out the H13 I'd also brought, thinking I'd swap it in instead. And that's when I discovered the second problem.
The H13 Sylvania LED bulb fits the socket but not the housing. It has a driver box on the back, and on that particular Subaru, the driver box hits the inside of the headlight assembly. Even though the bulb rotates and locks securely, there's not enough physical clearance behind the socket. I had to return those and order a slimmer-profile LED bulb.
The lesson: a bulb can fit the socket and still not fit the vehicle. You have to check both dimensions—electrical and physical.
The Home Side: G4 Downlight and RGBW Downlight
Meanwhile, inside the house, I was making a different set of mistakes.
The kitchen had old halogen G4 downlight fixtures—those little two-pin capsules you see in puck lights and some recessed fixtures. The plan was to swap them for LED G4 downlight replacements. But I didn't check what transformer was powering the existing G4 circuit. The old setup ran on 12V. The new LED G4 downlights I'd brought needed a different driver. I had to go back to the shop for a compatible LED driver, which cost me half a day and about $140 in extra parts (which, honestly, was the cheapest lesson of the whole job).
The living room RGBW downlights were a whole different animal.
RGBW, for anyone who hasn't worked with them, means red, green, blue, and a dedicated white channel. They're great because you can tune color effects. But they're also a double-edged sword. The white channel alone typically gives you one fixed color temperature. If you think RGBW means you get a fully tunable white, you'd be partially wrong. You get whichever white the manufacturer built into the chip. That matters when a client says "warm and cozy" and you've installed 5000K whites.
I installed six of these in Ray's living room. The color mixing at full brightness looked fantastic. At lower dimmer levels, it got weird. Some channels turned off or flickered before others. Dimming curves on RGBW fixtures aren't always smooth when paired with a non-compatible dimmer. I learned that the hard way, and I had to swap the dimmers too.
The Money Tree Moment
Here's where the story turns, and it's the part I still kick myself about.
Ray's wife had a money tree (Pachira aquatica) in the corner of the living room. I'd seen it during the first walkthrough and thought nothing of it.
Three weeks after I finished the job, Ray called me. The money tree was dropping leaves. His wife was asking if the new LED lights were hurting the plant.
My first instinct was defensive. LEDs don't emit heat like halogens, I said. The plant should be fine. But I drove over anyway.
The problem wasn't heat. It was light quantity. The old halogen setup was running at full intensity and casting a broad warm glow that reached the plant corner for five or six hours every evening. The new RGBW downlights were tuned for a specific accent effect, and the corner where the money tree sat was getting about 15% of the light it used to get.
So, can a money tree grow in low light? Technically, yes—it will survive. But "survive" and "thrive" are two different things. In a corner that gets 15% of its former light, the plant wasn't doing either.
The fix was humbling: I added a single Sylvania LED spotlight aimed at the wall above the plant to bounce light onto it. Cost: about $28. The tree recovered within a month.
The Surprising Part
The surprise wasn't that I was wrong. I'd been wrong before. The surprise was that Ray ended up being one of my best referral sources.

The Deeper Lesson
From the outside, lighting installation looks straightforward. Put the right bulb in the right socket. The reality is that "right" is determined by a web of factors that has no mercy for assumptions: vehicle trim levels, driver voltages, housing dimensions, dimmer curves, and even plant light requirements. You can be a good installer and still trip on any one of them.
People also assume that more expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, the causation runs the other way—vendors who deliver quality can charge more. What makes the difference is diligence. Nobody is above checking the numbers, no matter how many jobs they've done.
