August 2022. I was standing in a freshly renovated front office, watching a row of brand-new Sylvania downlights flicker like a bad fluorescent tube. The electrician next to me asked the question I didn't want to hear: "Did you check if your dimmers are compatible with the drivers?"
I hadn't. That mistake cost about $900 in rework and a Friday night I'll never get back.
I manage facilities for a regional service company. I've spent 11 years changing ballasts, replacing switches, and ordering bulbs for both the building and the fleet. I've also made documented mistakes totaling more than $6,400. This one was the most embarrassing because I answered "can I put a dimmer switch on any light?" with a confident yes for years. That yes was wrong.
A Two-Project Week
That week, I had two orders in my cart. The first was for the office and shop: six Sylvania downlights and four Sylvania fixtures on track. Two of those track heads were going to be a white spotlight for the product wall, one was a red spotlight lens for the brand sign, and the fourth was a spare. The second order was for our service van: a set of Sylvania H8 LED fog light bulbs.

Then we started playing with the dimmers.
The first sign of trouble was a hum. At 60%, the downlights sounded like a cheap refrigerator. At 20%, one of them started strobing. The fixture with the red spotlight buzzed so loudly that the office manager asked if an alarm was going off.
By 9 p.m., I was on a ladder googling "can I put a dimmer switch on any light" while my own confident yes echoed in my head. The answer was no. Not any light. Not safely.
What I Missed
At midnight, I finally read the datasheet. The Sylvania fixtures I chose were dimmable, but the driver inside expected a specific control type. I had installed cheap residential leading-edge dimmers. The driver's compatibility list included a few leading-edge controls, but not the ones I bought. "Dimmable" isn't the same as "dimmable with your switch."
That's where the real lesson lives. There are two common phase-cut dimming methods: leading-edge and trailing-edge. Many standard residential dimmers are leading-edge, also called TRIAC. Some LED drivers are designed for trailing-edge only. Mixing them creates flicker, hum, or even driver failure. NEMA SSL 7A covers basic compatibility for phase-cut dimming in solid-state lighting, and a good fixture spec sheet will reference that or include a compatible controls list.
I knew I should have checked the datasheet before ordering. But I thought, "What are the odds?" The odds caught up with me at 20% dimming.
The H8 LED Parallel
Here's the part that still makes me laugh. While we were troubleshooting the dimmers, the shop mechanic walked over and reminded me about the van's fog light order. "You ordered the Sylvania H8 LED, right? Did you check if the housing has clearance for the heat sink?"
I had not.
The Sylvania H8 LED was still in its box. I had checked the bulb type, the color temperature, and the review score. I hadn't checked whether the old fog light housing on that specific van had room for the cooling fan. (Surprise, surprise—that came next.)
So in one week, I learned two versions of the same lesson: check compatibility before you buy, not after you've got the fixture in the air or the bulb in your hand.
My Pre-Order Checklist Now
Since that week, I've kept a checklist in my phone. I use it for every lighting order, even small ones. It's simple, but it would have saved me the $900 and the embarrassment.
- Write down the exact model number. Not "the round one" or "the same as last time." The material number that ends in a string of digits.
- Look for the words "dimmable driver" plus a compatibility list. If a fixture says dimmable but doesn't list compatible controls, stop and call the manufacturer before ordering.
- Ask whether the switch box has a neutral wire. Many smart dimmers and some LED dimmers need a neutral. Older buildings often don't have one.
- Check beam angle and color before assuming "spotlight" is enough. A white spotlight with a 24-degree beam lights a product wall very differently than a 40-degree beam. A red spotlight isn't just a white light with a red lens; if the LED spectrum isn't designed for it, the output can look muddy.
- For automotive LED bulbs, check the housing and the wiring. A Sylvania H8 LED has the correct base for an H8 socket, but the housing depth, heat sink clearance, and vehicle canbus requirements are separate questions.
The Real Cost
That one job cost me around $900 in extra labor and a return trip from the electrician. We kept the original dimmers on one circuit and installed a different control on the other. It also cost me credibility with the office manager, who was not amused by the strobe light moment.
What bothered me most wasn't the money. It was that the space looked broken. A flickering fixture makes the whole renovation feel cheap, even when the fixture itself is good. The client doesn't remember the brand name or the fixture specs. They remember a light that wouldn't behave. That's the quality problem no warranty covers.
Since then, I've caught 47 potential errors using that checklist. Some were small—a wrong trim color or a missing remote. A few were bigger. So, Can You Put a Dimmer Switch on Any Light?
No. Not any light. The safe answer is: you can put a dimmer on a light only if the fixture's driver and the switch are compatible, and in many cases the manufacturer has to list them together.
With incandescent or halogen bulbs, you have more freedom. With LEDs—especially commercial fixtures with separate drivers—you need to do the homework. Start with the fixture datasheet. Check the compatibility list. If you can't find one, call the manufacturer before you buy.
My experience is based on maybe 60 retrofits in a mid-sized industrial setting and 30 vehicle bulb swaps, most of them with Sylvania or comparable branded parts. If you're working with a different driver, a different wiring setup, or a vehicle I've never seen, your experience might be different. That's exactly why I check instead of assume.
