A Sylvania Quality Inspector's LED Lighting Checklist: Auto Bulbs, Downlights & LED Strips

I'm a quality/compliance manager at Sylvania Lighting. I review every LED SKU before it reaches customers—roughly 300 unique items a year, covering automotive headlight bulbs, Zevo smart lighting, and recessed fixtures. In 2024, I rejected about 7% of first submissions, mostly for color temperature drift between batches or incomplete documentation. This checklist is the short version of what I tell people when they ask what actually matters.

It's written for buyers who order lighting for resale or installation: distributors, electrical contractors, auto parts shops, and facility teams. Six checks. Run them in order and you'll catch most of the issues that usually get discovered after the install, not before.

Check 1: Read the spec sheet, not the front of the box

The front of a retail LED package is a marketing surface. The fine print on the side is the real specification. For home lighting, especially the Sylvania Zevo LED line, I look at three numbers first: actual lumens, color temperature (2700K vs. 3000K vs. 5000K), and CRI.

ENERGY STAR sets the floor at CRI 80. We target 90+ on most Zevo bulbs. I'll be honest: I used to think the CRI difference was overblown. Everything I'd read said 80 CRI is perfectly fine for general spaces. Then we ran a blind test with our own installers back in 2022—same room, same fixture, two bulbs, one at 80 and one at 90. 11 out of 14 picked the 90 CRI bulb as "clearly better." They couldn't say why. They just saw it. That experience changed how I review specs.

(As of January 2025, our Zevo spec sheets list CRI, lumen output, and ANSI color bin on the side panel. If you're comparing a competing product and that info isn't printed anywhere, that tells you something.)

Check 2: Fitment is not the same as compliance

This is the biggest trip-up in automotive. Sylvania auto headlight bulbs are available in several base types—H4, H7, 9005, 9006, 3157—and at a glance they can look interchangeable. They're not. A bulb can physically click into a housing and still be wrong for the vehicle.

A 9005 and a 9006 look nearly identical, but they're not interchangeable: the 9005 is typically a high-beam bulb, and the 9006 is generally a low-beam application. Put them in the wrong socket and you get poor output or a misaligned cutoff. That kind of defect doesn't show up on a workbench—it shows up when a customer is driving at 70 on a dark road.

We check beam pattern and DOT compliance against FMVSS 108 before approving any Sylvania auto headlight bulb for on-road use. "DOT-approved" printed on a package is not the same as a beam pattern that suits the reflector and lens behind it. If you distribute or install aftermarket bulbs, keep an application guide handy. Fitment-related returns are the single biggest category in our automotive QA data.

As of our Q1 2025 quality audit, all Zevo and SilverStar auto bulbs ship with a fitment chart inside the carton. The base gets you into the socket. The beam pattern gets you down the road.

Check 3: Look past the trim when you spec a downlight

The search terms "dmf downlight" and "double downlight" both come back to the same practical question: which recessed fixture goes into this ceiling? The visible trim looks similar across most options. The specs underneath are what differ.

Three things I check on every downlight spec:

  • IC rating. Is the housing rated for insulation contact? In an insulated ceiling, a non-IC fixture is a code violation and a genuine risk. UL 1598 covers the requirements. This is not optional.
  • Location rating. Bathroom ceilings, covered porches, and shower areas need damp or wet-rated housings. A double downlight above a soaking tub is a different product than the same-looking fixture for a dry kitchen ceiling.
  • Field-replaceable modules. If a double downlight has one LED module fail, can you swap just that module, or does the entire fixture have to come down? I recommend field-replaceable modules on anything going into a finished ceiling. It's not the cheapest option, but the labor savings on the first repair usually justify it.

That said, context matters. In a cold climate with spray foam insulation, enclosure requirements are different from a warm-climate build with ventilated ceilings. I can only speak to what I've seen in our field testing and returns data. Your local building inspector makes the final call, and they outrank me on the jobsite.

Check 4: Yes, you can cut LED strip lights to size—at the cut lines

This one comes up constantly: can you cut LED strip lights to size? Yes, in most cases. LED strips, including our Sylvania under-cabinet strips, have designated cut lines every few inches—usually at the copper pads every 2–3 LEDs. Cut precisely on those lines and the remaining segments work fine. Cut anywhere else and you'll lose that section.

Beyond the cut lines, watch voltage drop. 12V strips lose noticeable brightness past roughly 15 feet. 24V runs longer before you see it. For a kitchen under-cabinet job with short 4-foot pieces, 12V is fine and cheaper. If you're planning a long continuous perimeter run, spec 24V from the start.

A moment of honesty: I approved a 12V strip order for a warehouse aisle installation and immediately second-guessed myself. The two days until the samples arrived were stressful. It worked out because the runs were short. But the choice is easier to make before you order five hundred feet, not after.

Also, cutting a strip voids the warranty for that cut piece. That's normal across the industry. Keep spare connectors, test the strip before you peel the backing tape, and confirm the connector type before you order accessories. Nothing worse than arriving at a job with mismatched connectors.

Check 5: Verify the dimmer before installation (the step everyone skips)

Not every dimmable LED works with every dimmer. We test Zevo bulbs against leading-edge and trailing-edge dimmers, and we publish the compatibility list for a reason.

The conventional wisdom is that a reverse-phase dimmer basically works with any LED. That's not what our tests show. We've tested over 30 dimmers and seen buzzing at low levels, drop-out below 20%, and a few that simply don't engage properly depending on the driver design.

I had to make this call under time pressure once—a distributor needed a dimmer recommendation for a rush retrofit, and the compatibility list was mid-update. In hindsight, I should have asked for more time. The dimmer they'd already ordered didn't match the driver, and it had to be swapped after installation. That's the kind of mistake that costs more than the dimmer itself.

So check the compatibility list before you buy. This is the anti-intuitive step. Lumens and color temperature get the attention, but dimming compatibility is where the support calls come from.

Check 6: Save the paperwork and keep the warranty straight

I know paperwork is boring. Here's the practical version: our LED products carry a limited warranty that runs 3–5 years depending on the product line. Auto headlight bulbs have a shorter window, which is normal for the category.

What typically voids coverage:

  • Cutting LED strips outside the designated cut lines
  • Using the wrong input voltage or the wrong dimmer type
  • Installing a downlight in a damp location when it's not rated for damp locations
  • Modifying the fixture yourself

I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining this than deal with a mismatched return later. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. It saves us both time.

Common mistakes that show up in our QA data

If you skip the checklist, here's what shows up in our quality data most often:

  • Mixing color temperatures in the same room. It's more noticeable in person than it looks on paper.
  • Choosing auto headlight bulbs by lumens only, ignoring beam pattern and fitment.
  • Assuming all downlights are IC-rated. Most budget housings are not.
  • Running 12V LED strips too far without accounting for voltage drop.
  • Assuming "dimmable" means "works with my dimmer."

Bottom line: the cost of checking up front is almost always lower than the cost of the alternative. Run these six checks on your next Sylvania lighting order—whether it's Zevo LED bulbs, auto headlight bulbs, downlights, or LED strips—and you'll avoid the pitfalls that usually surface in the field.
